Zambia Department of Water Affairs

The DWA is the technical department of the Ministry. The MEWD is the executive wing of the Government of the Republic of Zambia that is responsible for water policy definition and water resources management and development. A Cabinet Minister heads it. Its mission is "to promote sustainable development and management of water resources to ensure availability of quality, affordable safe water to enhance national socio-economic development". The DWA is responsible for water resources management and development. Specifically, the DWA undertakes water rights investigations, hydrological and hydrology investigations, water resources information management, groundwater and surface water development.

User consultation meetings have outlined the core needs of the MEWD for water resource management. These are the basis for development of a number of Demonstration Cases set up within TIGER NET to support MEWD in:

  • Water Quality Monitoring
  • Historical Flood Assessment
  • Hydrology Modelling framework for real time water discharge and flood forecasting
  • Mapping of small water bodies
